The word "Doula" comes from the Greek and refers to a Female Servant. As a doula, I teach women and their partner how to advocate for themselves and how to ask questions of their provider so that they can make evidence based decisions. I teach them about the normal prenatal tests and their risks and benefits. I help them to form a birth plan and then prepare them for the possible changes. I prepare them for the labor by showing them positions and practicing comfort measures. We discuss Breastfeeding if that is the plan for newborn feeding, but most importantly I listen and provide the family with what they re looking for, which can be from simple verbal support, education and encouragement to hands on help with breastfeeding. I have experience helping at hospital births attended by an OB, those attended by a Midwife, as well as being
in on a Cesarean Surgery. I "serve" the family's needs.
As a doula, I do NOT do, vaginal exams, medical testing or procedures, diagnosis, prenatal exams, or speak on your behalf to the medical staff. I also do NOT take the place of the husband, but instead support him in helping to be a support to you. There is no one who knows you like your partner and those little things will be huge in helping you to achieve your private space!
I DO, work for you and not the birthing facility, therefore I will meet you at your home or place of birth when you feel you need support. I will stay for the duration of your labor and birth and for a couple hours after to make sure you are settled into your new role as parent. I will be on call from week 38 of your pregnancy through week 42. I am happy to chat via phone, text, or email from the time of interview and beyond birth.
